Millions of people are seeking romance on the internet. Dating sites are perfect places for internet fraudsters to recruit unknowing accomplices under the guise of looking for love.
Here’s how it goes. Scammers troll dating and matchmaking sites looking for lonely women or men looking for a relationship. Emails fly back and forth. Love seems to blossom. The proposal of marriage follows with plans for a perfect life together.
The fish has been reeled in. The scammer asks use the mailing address of the lonely heart for delivery. of packages. It all seems innocent enough and the lonely heart agrees. Little does the lonely heart know that the scammer used stolen credit cards to buy the merchandise.
Almost immediately packages begin to arrive. The scammer asks the lonely heart to ship the packages to an address outside of the country. Since the lonely heart has not spent any money, it’s easy to agree. Preaddressed shipping labels arrive which the lonely heart affixes to the packages. The delivery company picks up the packages.
Suddenly, the romance is over. The lonely heart is abandoned as the scammer moves on to an easily recruited next victim. Weeks later, the lonely heart is presented with a huge shipping bill from the freight company which the lonely heart is expected to pay. If the bill is not paid, the shipping company threatens to press charges. The embarrassed lonely heart pays the bill.
Good bye love. Hello loneliness and financial devastation.
