Ways to Steal an Identity

1. Dumpster dive to recover financial information. Amazingly enough, even in these days of high awareness about ID theft, most companies and consumers throw away private data without shredding or any other precautions.

2. Shoulder surfing where information is gathered from observing public transactions. Be aware of who is watching you.

3. Trojan horses and hacking to steal information from computer databases.

4. Infiltration of organizations that store financial information. This happens either by corrupting a current employee or when the organization unknowingly hires a “mole”.

5. Phishing by falsely impersonating a trusted organization on the internet in attempts to gather financial information

6. Gathering information from public records. Most public data bases are not truly privacy protected and are easy to invade.

7. Browsing social networking sites for personal information. Surprising how naïve people can be when posting on these site.

If your ID is stolen, you will spend endless hours trying to clear your name. In addition to immediate financial loss, you may never be free of the damage caused by ID theft. Victims report that the emotional impact of ID theft is similar to that of victims of violent crimes.
